Out of control iMac Fans racing or spinning full speed constantly or too often can be software or hardware related.
Hardware Related:
-When the fan is running out of control after an HDD hard drive is replaced or upgraded with a solid state hard drive (SSD): In certain models of iMacs, Apple uses a temperature sensor that connects to a part of the hard drive called the jumper block. Because the SDD drives lack this, the mac’s logic board senses there is a problem and spins fans up to max speed to prevent overheating damage to the iMac.
